Climbing Chimborazo

This huge Andean mountain is the highest point in Ecuador (20,720 ft.) with the country’s highest refuge “Refugio Edward Whymper”. Did you know that the Chimborazo Volcano is actually the world’s highest mountain? Because of the earth’s form, it is farther from the core than Mount Everest.

It is a paradise for mountain climbers and a highlight during an Ecuador holiday. There are two common routes for active travelers climbing up to the summit of Mount Chimborazo, the regular one leads up the Southwest. Climbing Chimborazo is not easy and you need a good physical condition for this part of your Ecuador holiday.

Highlights: Get as close to the sun as possible from the earth! Climb the world's true highest mountain.

You leave Quito early, drive to the Hermanos Carrel Hut on the base of Chimborazo and hike to the Whymper Refuge (16,400 ft.). After preparing your equipment you will go on a short hike up to an altitude of 17,191 ft. Then you have an early dinner and turn in for the night.
The next day starts early to ensure that you have enough time to reach the summit by 7:00 am. It will take about 7 hours to the top and another 3 to return back.

Please make sure you’re acclimatized before climbing Chimborazo. Start, for example, with our 6-day Mountain Tour and climb the Cayambe first, before you try climbing Ecuador’s highest mountain.

Additional Information

Climbing in the Ecuadorian Andes is a true adventure! Whether you are an experienced mountaineer or just starting to get some experience, acclimatization is super important. You should be about 5 to 7 days in high altitude and climb one of the other higher volcanos before you intent to climb Chimborazo. We offer a 6-day mountain tour which includes some smaller summits before trying to reach the top of the Cayambe volcano. After that, you could then try Chimborazo. We can of course also create an individual preparation tour for you.
