After breakfast we want to set out for a city tour in Quito, this way you will immediately get used to the altitude. During a relaxing round trip around Quito, your guide will give you many interesting details about the historical center of Quito. Since 1978 it is part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List, as it is the best preserved historical center of Latin America. During this trip you can get impressed by Quito’s many churches, historical colonial buildings and monuments.
The afternoon can be spent as you wish.
In the evening you will sleep in Portal de Cantuña again.
Day 3 – Hike and Ascent of the Pasochoa Volcano (4.200m)
Already early in the morning we leave the capital to drive towards the Pasochoa volcano. It is an extinct volcano with a wide caldera which is sunken to the west, which gives you an impressive imagery. With its height of 4.200 meters above sea level it is a good beginning for acclimatization for other mountain climbing hikes. Because of its location in the middle of the Avenue of Volcanoes, it offers a great view from its top to other mountains, among others the Cayambe. Also the notable nature on the top can be impressive, as (with some luck) you might see pumas, foxes and many species of birds.
In the evening you will sleep in Huerta Sacha.
Day 4 –Ascent of Iliniza Norte (5.126m)
The Volcano Iliniza is located at about 60 km south-west of Quito. It belongs to the western Andes and offers a magnificent view over the surrounding mountains and valleys. The Iliniza Norte has a summit purely made of rocks and is seldom covered by snow. Very early in the morning you will drive to Estacion de la Virgen, from where the mountain climbing hike will start. The hike up the Ilinizas Norte leads you through an amazing landscape called Páramo, the name for Ecuadorian steppe, filled with blooming shrubs and thorny bushes. After the hike, you will be driven to Cayambe where you will have a well-deserved rest in an amazing Hacienda called San Luis.
Day 5 – Cayambe
From Cayambe you will drive an hour to Ruales Oleas mountain shelter at 4.600m. In the afternoon you will spend some hours on the glacier and train the handling of crampons, rope and ice axes. Then you will go back to the mountain hut, where dinner will be served.
Day 6 – Ascent of Cayambe and return to Quito
At midnight you will get up for the mountain climbing hike. After breakfast and after all backpacks are packed and ready for the climb, you will start around 1:00. For the ascension we will need approximately 6 to 8 hours. At the summit at 5.790 meters there will be enough time for taking pictures and enjoying the view.
