Fernandina Island belongs to the wildest islands of the archipelago and is reserved for experienced snorkelers: here Gal\u00e1pagos penguins meet green sea turtles and occasionally seahorses in seagrass meadows. Espa\u00f1ola Island impresses with shallow water off Punta Su\u00e1rez (6.5 to 10 feet \/ 2 to 3 m deep) with emerald-green seas and enormous concentrations of Gal\u00e1pagos sea lions that swim curiously around snorkelers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Access to Gal\u00e1pagos snorkeling occurs almost exclusively through an organized cruise or land-based tour program. Individual day trips do exist from the inhabited islands Santa Cruz and San Crist\u00f3bal, but they only cover the immediately adjacent, tourism-intensive spots. True snorkeling adventures require a 7- to 10-day cruise departing only from the port in Puerto Baquerizo (San Crist\u00f3bal) or Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

I visited in July, during the dry season, and the experience had crystalline sharpness: the water was so clear I could identify details of stonefish on the seafloor 20 feet (6 m) below me, and the southeast wind brought fresh energy. Who Is Gal\u00e1pagos Snorkeling NOT Suitable For?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Snorkeling in Gal\u00e1pagos is spectacular, but it’s not a leisure activity without demands. I advise against it if you: have aquaphobia or irrational fear of sharks \u2014 you will see sharks, even though they pose no threat. Cannot swim or are only comfortable in shallow water with bottom contact \u2014 even the shallowest snorkeling spots are at 6.5 to 10 feet (2 to 3 m) depth, and currents can be unexpected. Suffer from stomach issues or motion sickness aggravated by boat transfers or swimming in open water \u2014 not all days are calm, and boats can experience rough seas. Have severely restricted lung capacity or medical conditions that complicate breathing effort \u2014 snorkeling is more physically demanding than it appears.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
