The Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve is one of the Ecuadorian regions in the Amazon. It offers spectacular nature, wildlife and birdwatching opportunities. Do you want to enjoy and explore the rainforest during your Ecuador tour and don’t need a luxury suite or Jacuzzi? Then you may choose our Cuyabeno Rainforest Tour. The Lodges here are eco-friendly and comfy, but don’t expect any luxuries. Instead of a pool you have the Laguna Grande right in front of your lodge. A nice invitation for a swim surrounded by nature, right? On your tour to the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve you will explore flora and fauna by day and night. As well as an impression of the indigenous culture and traditions. Also you will travel by canoe a lot. Nature, wildlife and birdwatching lovers get their money’s worth during this part of their Ecuador tour.

Itinerary

Day 1: Quito - Lago Agrio - Cuyabeno Lodge

river turtles in the Cuyabeno reserveThe Cuyabeno Rainforest Tour can finally begin! You will fly over the Andes to the frontier oil town of Lago Agrio, (approx. start of tour  9:30 am). Once you have arrived, you will have a private transportation to the “Cuyabeno Bridge” (distance 100 km). From there, you will meet your guide and have lunch in a local restaurant. A motorized canoe transportation along the Cuyabeno River is also included. The destination will be the River to Laguna Grande, where your lodge is located. During this journey of approx. 2 hours (depending upon the conditions of the river) you will be able to observe the richness of the wildlife. After settling into your room at the Lodge you will have many options. Decide between exploring the lagoon and observe animals, taking a swim in the lake, or enjoy the sunset from the canoe.

Day 2: Discover the Amazon Jungle

face of a capuchin monkey from up closeOnce you had breakfast, take a walk through the “terra firm forest” with your naturalist guide. There he will explain the wildlife, medicinal forest plants, the forest ecosystem and indigenous life. After lunch, a trip in a dugout canoe will follow. You will cross the river and have the chance to enjoy the unique flora flauna. If you are lucky, you may spot monkeys. Right after dinner, you have a night walk in primary forest to look for insects and observe nocturnal flora wildlife.

Day 3: Indigenous village and meeting with the Shaman

You can observe or participate in how they cook the typical “casabe” bread. Your guide gives you some explanations about the way of life in the jungle and in the community. Return to the Lodge for lunch. During the late afternoon, you can have a siesta and a refreshing swim in the Laguna Grande. After dinner, you go on a night excursion by canoe to spot caimans, snakes and nocturnal birds.

Day 4: Paddling, bird-watching and Kayaking in the Amazon Jungle

It is the best way to discover the wildlife and listening the sounds of the nature. In the evening, you will go on an excursion to discover smaller lagoons. Alternatively, you may hike along other paths in the Cuyabeno Reserve.

Day 5: Bird-watching and return to Quito

From there you will be brought back with our vehicle. You will reach Lago Agrio  around 15:30. The return to Quito will be by air. For this day, we will provide a lunch box.
