Panama City – A Blend of History and Modernity

Panama City, the capital of Panama, impressively manages to combine its rich history with modernity. In addition to numerous historical landmarks, there are many contemporary attractions that fascinate visitors from all over the world. In this blog, I will introduce you to some of the sights that make Panama City so unique. Immerse yourself in both the past and the future.

The Panama Canal

Before we move on to other attractions, I first want to mention the world-famous Panama Canal. The 82-kilometer-long canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It was built specifically to shorten the travel distance between the Pacific and Atlantic. Each year, about 14,300 ships pass through this impressive canal. Visitors can admire the canal from the visitor center, learn more about its history in the museum, or even take a one-day cruise through the canal. Especially impressive are the Miraflores Locks, as well as the newly constructed Cocoli Locks, which opened in 2016. Visitors can watch massive ships being guided through the canal with only inches to spare.

Historical Landmarks

The history of Panama’s capital dates back to the 16th century. Originally founded in 1519 by Europeans, the city was destroyed by pirates in 1671, and today only ruins remain of the original site. It was the first European settlement on the Pacific coast of the Americas. In 1673, Casco Viejo was established—Panama City’s current old town. Along with charming plazas and impressive churches, you’ll also find well-preserved buildings that tell the story of Panama’s past. As you stroll through the quarter, you’ll be struck by the cobbled streets, lush greenery, and brightly painted buildings with ornate balconies. Since 1997, the old town has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.

Iglesia de San José

Probably the most well-known church in Panama City, the Iglesia de San José was built in 1673. From the outside, the church appears quite unremarkable. But once inside, you’ll be left speechless. Alongside several gilded and intricately carved altars, there is a completely golden wooden altar located directly under the bell tower. According to legend, this altar was painted black to prevent pirates from realizing its value, which is why they left it untouched. Light filters through the beautifully painted stained-glass windows, depicting various patron saints. The Iglesia de San José is undoubtedly a must-see for every tourist.

City Plazas

As in every beautiful city, Panama City boasts a variety of lovely plazas. Plaza de Francia, dedicated to the French, features several monuments commemorating the French engineers and workers who lost their lives during France’s first attempt to build the Panama Canal. Plaza Herrera is known for its beautiful colonial buildings, while Plaza Simón Bolívar is popular due to the Iglesia San Francisco De Asis, which marks the highest point of the old town.

Arco Chato

The “flat arch” known as Arco Chato played a significant role in the decision to build the Panama Canal in Panama. This flat arch, part of the Convento de Santo Domingo—a former monastery—was constructed in the 17th century and stood for hundreds of years until it collapsed in 2003 due to an earthquake. Its long-standing stability was one of the reasons the U.S. chose Panama as the canal’s location.

Teatro Nacional de Panamá

Panama’s National Theatre is housed in a beautiful 19th-century building. It was designed by Italian architect Genaro Ruggieri in a lavish and artistic style. To this day, it remains a key venue for cultural events, performances, and concerts. Its stunning murals and remarkable acoustics never fail to impress visitors.

Modern Attractions

Biomuseo

Anyone visiting the Biomuseum is first struck by its colorful and unique architecture. The interior is equally captivating, featuring interactive exhibits, gardens, and various rooms that explore biodiversity and its importance to both Panama and the planet as a whole.

Cinta Costera

The Cinta Costera is a beautifully designed coastal boulevard. From here, you can enjoy fantastic views of both the Pacific Ocean and the impressive skyline of the modern city. Whether you want to walk, jog, cycle, or simply relax, the Cinta Costera is the perfect place to do it all.

Parque Metropolitano

Established in the late 20th century, this city park is unlike any other. Although it borders the southwestern buildings of Panama City, it is officially part of the Panamanian jungle. Once inside, it feels like stepping into a zoo—except the monkeys, sloths, anteaters, turtles, and other animals live freely in their natural habitat. This park offers a truly incredible and unique experience that will stay with you forever.

Modern Architecture

Panama City is home to eight of the ten tallest skyscrapers in South America and has a total of 22 buildings that rise over 200 meters into the sky. In the Punta Pacifica district in particular, you’ll find numerous impressive high-rises, elegant restaurants, and luxurious shopping centers. Especially striking is “El Tornillo,” a skyscraper that appears to twist upward like a corkscrew. The Trump International Tower, home to the Trump International Hotel, is also fascinating; from the outside, it looks as though several smaller towers were stacked on top of each other.

Conclusion

Panama City offers a captivating mix of historical significance, modern architecture, and natural beauty. The Panama Canal, a marvel of engineering, draws visitors with its scale and importance, while the UNESCO World Heritage Site Casco Viejo and landmarks like the Iglesia de San José offer deep insight into the city’s history. At the same time, modern structures like “El Tornillo” and the Biomuseo showcase cutting-edge design. With the ocean on one side and the jungle on the other, the city also promises unforgettable natural experiences.
