Exploring the Wonders of the Galapagos Islands - day 1 - 2
Mathy
Welcome aboard a unique adventure in the Galapagos Islands! Today, I’ll take you through my boat experience in this natural paradise, where diversity and beauty intertwine in every corner.
My journey began with excitement in the air as I boarded the plane in Quito, bound for Baltra Island, with a brief stopover in Guayaquil. From the moment I landed, the magic of the Galapagos enveloped me.
I was greeted in the Galapagos by the guide who would accompany me throughout this adventure. Upon leaving the airport, we took a bus to the dock where the Treasure yacht was anchored, a true floating gem that not only captivates with its beauty but also offers impeccable service and an attentive team that strives to make every moment unforgettable.
Day 1: Giant Tortoises and stunning Lava tunnels on Santa Cruz Island
Our first excursion took us to the stunning Santa Cruz Island, where we explored the Chato 2 ecological private reserve. Here we found the iconic Galapagos giant tortoises in their natural habitat! It was a true blessing to see them up close, some walking majestically, others enjoying a refreshing bath.
And not only that, we were also fortunate to discover the famous lava tunnels, a natural wonder that left us breathless. Here we had the opportunity to walk through dark passages and discover textures and unique structures made of lava.
Lava tunnels are one of the most interesting geological features of the Galapagos Islands. This impressive tunnel was formed millions of years ago when an underwater volcano erupted.
When hot magma flows from a volcano into the ocean, it cools rapidly upon contact with water. This causes a layer of hardened lava to form on the outside, while the interior flows to form a hollow tunnel. Over time, these tunnels can grow to considerable lengths and develop unique shapes and characteristics.
In the Galapagos Islands, lava tunnels can be found on several islands, including Santa Cruz, Isabela, and Santiago.
Lava tunnels also host a variety of wildlife, including crabs and seabirds. These tunnels provide shelter and protection to many species, making them both geologically and biologically important sites.
After a day filled with emotions, we returned to the yacht just in time to enjoy a spectacular sunset, followed by a delicious dinner prepared by the talented chef on board. With our minds full of memories and our hearts full of gratitude, we went to our comfortable cabins to rest and prepare for what the next day held for us.
Day 2: Underwater Adventures and Volcanic Landscapes
The second day of our adventure took us to explore new wonders of the Galapagos Islands, starting with an exciting visit to Sullivan Bay, known for its surreal landscapes and geological history.
This bay is located on Santiago Island, one of the youngest and most active volcanic islands in the archipelago. Sullivan’s Bay features a landscape of vast lava flows stretching to the sea, formed centuries ago by an underwater volcanic eruption.
One of the most impressive features of Sullivan’s Bay is the hiking trails that lead visitors through the lava fields. Walking on this terrain provides visitors with a unique experience, getting up close to the unique textures of the rock formations and solidified lava.
But the real magic began when we submerged into the crystal-clear waters of Santiago Island—what an experience it was! Swimming among colorful fish and vibrant corals, we came face to face with marine life in all its splendor. We had the incredible opportunity to swim alongside playful penguins, who greeted us with curiosity and friendship! I even managed to capture the perfect moment with a penguin selfie!
After a morning full of excitement, we returned to the yacht to enjoy a well-deserved onboard lunch, followed by some relaxing free time to rest and recharge. But the adventure was far from over. In the afternoon, we headed towards the stunning Bartolomé Island, where we climbed a small mountain to enjoy panoramic views of the spectacular Pinnacle Rock, a lava formation that rises majestically above the ocean.
With the sun setting on the horizon and the air filled with excitement, we returned to the yacht to share stories and laughter about the incredible experiences of the day. And as we went to rest, our hearts were full of anticipation for the adventures that awaited us tomorrow.
In the next article you can read what we experienced in the following days. But perhaps we have already aroused your interest in a cruise? We would be happy to find together with you the right route and the right ship!
